let’s talk: ring sizing
The size of your fingers can fluctuate from year to year, day to day and even morning to night which can make it hard to determine your ring size. The changing seasons and the warmer/cooler temperatures are one of the biggest factors that will change the size of your fingers!
It can be even more complicated to get the right ring size if the recipient isn’t there or doesn’t know it is being made for them, however we’re hoping that we’ll be able to shed some light on this and make it as foolproof as possible.
It’s almost impossible to get it bang on which is why we offer free ring resizing for the first six weeks after you take your ring home, so try not to worry too much.
If you’re trying to be sneaky (in the best possible way!), we’d recommend observing your partner’s jewellery that they currently wear. Not only is this useful for ring sizing, it is also good for deciding on metal type and colour (we’ve got a full blog post on that here). Think about what style do they wear the most of? On what fingers? If they take their rings off, you can take advantage and take a quick measurement when they’re not around!
There are a few methods you can use to estimate your ring size at home. Trying out a few of the following suggestions will help to give you a good idea.
You can find online ring measuring tools like this one here. You print out the guide and measure any existing rings against the different sizes to see which is the best fit. This is only going to be useful if your partner already wears rings.
If your partner doesn’t wear rings, you could try a string technique. Similarly, you could use a plastic cable tie. There is plenty of advice on Google about how to best do this. It’s important to note that there is a tendency to tighten these too much, but it is still a good method to give you a rough idea.
USING A RULER
The method we would recommend is a quick and simple one - use a ruler! This works for those who already wear rings. Pop their ring on the ruler as pictured and take a picture where the ruler shows the inside diameter at the widest point. If you don’t want to risk taking a photo, just keep note of the measurement and email it over to us. This is the best indicator for Katie and gives her the best chance of sizing your ring up right the first time around. It’s also helpful if you let us know what hand/finger they wear that ring on, so we can adjust the sizing accordingly.
A few things to keep in mind:
Your dominant hand tends to be ever so slightly bigger than the other… This may not be the case for everyone as we’re all unique, but it is something to consider!
The width of the ring may also impact the size of ring you need. The wider it is, the more it will hug the finger and the tighter it will feel.
Lastly, the placement on your finger will change the size. For example, if you’re adding to a stack of rings, the new ring will be sitting higher up on your finger, so you may need a slightly different size.
Worried your ring doesn’t fit or feel quite right?
Remember that ring sizing is free for the first six weeks after collection of your ring, so don’t panic. Just get in touch so we can arrange to resize with you.
It is also worth keeping in mind that you may need to get your ring resized later down the line as your fingers can fluctuate in size. If you ever feel that your ring is cutting off blood supply or is painful to wear, then please seek advice from a jeweller and allow changes to be made.
If you have any doubts or you’re still unsure of how to measure, use the contact page to get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise.
